"The independent living paradigm is based on the assumption that the restrictions
faced by individuals are societal- not individual. The change agents, according to the
independent living model, must be those individuals affected by the problem, namely
individuals with disabilities... The problem, as viewed by the independent living model,
is the dependence of people with disabilities on professionals, relatives, and others,
inadequate support services, and architectural and economic barriers. The
independent living paradigm tries to break the dependence of others and develop self-
reliance" (Parker, B.L., University of Florida, 1994-1995).
