The following information is provided to you prior to agreeing to participate in the online training, surveys and materials developed by the Transition Coalition.
The Transition Coalition with the Department of Special Education at the University of Kansas evaluates its online professional development to determine the effectiveness of online training on topics related to secondary special education and the transition of youth with disabilities from school to adult life. Because we are using the data as part of an ongoing evaluation, KU considers it to be a “research study.” Therefore, the following information is required by KU for your consent.
KU supports the practice of protection for human subjects participating in research. The following information is provided for you to decide whether you wish to participate in the present evaluation. You may refuse to agree to the following information and not participate in this data collection. You should be aware that even if you agree to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time. If you do withdraw, it will not affect your relationship with this unit, the services it may provide to you, or the University of Kansas.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this research is to determine the effectiveness of online training on topics related to secondary special education and the transition of youth with disabilities from school to adult life.
DATA COLLECTED
- Creating an account on the Transition Coalition website
Participants interested in receiving or utilizing the online training, surveys, and materials developed by the Transition Coalition will need to create an account to have access to all materials. To create an account, a participant must identify an email address and password for the account. In addition, a participant must complete a demographic data survey. No highly sensitive data (e.g. social security number, address, credit card information, student id, etc.) is requested. Without an account, participants can still be able to obtain and use some of the materials on the website.
- Generating data by taking modules, surveys or participating in online communities
Once an account has been created, participants using the Transition Coalition website have access to all free online training, surveys, materials, and online communities. As a participant completing a training module, you will be asked to complete a pre-post knowledge survey, as well as other specific responses to case-based examples and questions. The data generated from your completion of modules, surveys, and other online resources is entered into our database for the purpose of determining effectiveness of our online tools. Your data will be aggregated with other participants’ data and will never be used individually or with your name associated with it.
- Reporting data
If you are participating in the Transition Coalition training or surveys as part of a college or university course, your course instructor may require you to send him/her the results of your activities on the Transition Coalition website. You will have the authority to send your results to your instructor and the Transition Coalition will not send this information without your consent.
If you are participating in the Transition Coalition training or surveys as part of a contract the Transition Coalition has with your state department of education, we may provide staff with the state department of education with aggregated data or a report including your information. Individual data will not be shared.
REFUSAL TO GIVE AUTHORIZATION
You are not required to give authorization and you may refuse to do so without affecting your right to any services you are receiving or may receive from the University of Kansas, Transition Coalition or to participate in any programs or events of the University of Kansas. However, if you refuse to give authorization below, you will not be able to create an account. Therefore, you will not be able to utilize any of the features on the Transition Coalition website requiring an account including online training modules, surveys, and online communities of practice.
CANCELLING THIS AUTHORIZATION
You may withdraw your authorization at any time.
